About Home by the Roots

square headshot in black and white

I’m Avril, mom of 3, teacher, musician, writer, and wife of an Army reservist. I like quiet spaces and happy faces, Madeleine L’Engle and Mr. Rogers, among other things. I don’t like moving, but I’ve done it a lot. In fact, my husband and I have moved 11 times in 13 years, including 7 times with kids.

I created this blog to help relocating families find ways to make a smoother transition to their new home. We’ve learned a lot from our frequent moves, but I think the most valuable knowledge we’ve gained is how to “pull up our home by the roots,” so we can transplant to a new place without losing what makes us a family. Whether you’re moving by choice or by necessity, once a year or once in a lifetime, I’d love to help you do the same.
